Offensive language

Offensive language used includes “slag”, “slut”, “f*ck” “f*cking”, “sh*t”, “b*tch,” wh*re," and “f*ckarse”.

Noah’s female family members coin Joanne a ‘Shiksa’ which is a word of Yiddish origin often used in a disparaging way for a non-Jewish woman.

Sexual themes

Joanne and her sister Morgan host a podcast talking about sex and relationships.

We see Joanne and Noah go to a sex shop on a first date, and playfully flirting by hitting each other with some of the bondage equipment.

We see the couple kissing, and hugging in bed through montages as their relationship progresses. We see them post-sex in bed, and they’re topless but no nudity detail is seen.

Drug use and mature themes

The series deals with the religion and relationship challenges for a Jewish Rabbi to be dating a non-Jewish woman. This is shown through fun and awkward encounters in and around Noah’s role as Rabbi in the community.

A character sets himself up for a quiet night at home watching movies with snacks. We see him take ‘weed snacks’ before he’s surprised by his teenage daughter arriving home early. She doesn’t see the drugs on the kitchen bench, nor does she suspect that he’s mildly high.  The scene is comedic as he attempts to help his daughter with a relationship issue by creating a fake online social media profile to message a boy from school. This drug use isn’t shown as excessive or harmful and there are no negative consequences shown; Marijuana is legal in the location this series is based.

He later mentions to his wife that he had a lovely evening getting high and watching movies, and that he now appears to have an online relationship with a teenage boy. This requires viewers to be old enough to contextualise the comedy and know that creating fake social media profiles and communicating with underage people is illegal and not ok.

A character mentions being ‘California high like Miley Cyrus’ in reference to taking marijuana and not drinking alcohol at the party.
