My guilty pleasure might not be très chic to you, but before you say "non" to my Emily in Paris moments, let’s unpack why our beloved series sometimes come with different age ratings. After all, everyone’s got their own Parisian adventure!

Navigating age ratings and content warnings on streaming platforms can be as challenging as picking the perfect outfit in Emily in Paris (Netflix). While films come with a single rating, things get a bit more complicated with series. Shows like Emily in Paris have a rating that covers the entire season, but other series, like House of the Dragon (Neon), which airs episodes weekly, might have different ratings for each episode. It's important to check and understand content warnings before pressing play, ensuring you're prepared for what lies ahead.

Here’s how Emily in Paris stacks up in terms of age ratings and content warnings across its seasons:

Season 1: M | Drug use, offensive language, and sex scenes

Season 2: 13 | Sexual themes

Season 3: M | Offensive language and sex scenes

Season 4: 13 | Sexual themes

What is the difference between an M and 13 rating on a streaming service?

Content with an M rating is suitable for mature audiences but are unrestricted and anyone can view the content. M rated films and series often explore adult themes such as sex, violence and horror but at a low level. It is important to read the content warning before pressing play. For example, in Emily in Paris romantic themes are central, but the focus is more on flirtation and passionate kissing rather than explicit sex scenes.

On the other hand, content rated 13 is unsuitable for viewers under 13 years of age and may delve into these themes with more detail. In Emily in Paris season three, for instance, the strongest scene with sexual themes involves two characters taking off each other’s clothes, with the implication of sex conveyed through a cut to the next morning, without showing explicit content. If the series did show the sex scene and included more explicit detail it would likely push it up to a 16.

In Aotearoa, streaming services must display clear and consistent age ratings and content warnings, ensuring viewers are well-informed before pressing play. While movies are rated once for the entire film, series can be a bit more complex. Shows like Emily in Paris have season-wide ratings, reflecting the overall content. In contrast, other series like The Boys (Prime Video) might have fluctuating ratings per episode due to varying themes or intensities. For instance, an episode might start with mild content and gradually introduce more mature themes, requiring a higher rating.

And while episodes are released weekly, particularly for series like House of the Dragon, it’s crucial to note that content can evolve as the season progresses. A show might begin with an M rating but climb to something more age-restricted as things heat up. We understand that this can be a bit of a puzzle, but the key is to stay informed. Before hitting play, make sure to check those content warnings to keep everyone in the room comfortable and safe.

Keep those content warnings in mind, settle in with your favourite cozy blanket, and let the streaming adventure begin. After all, your personal Parisian escape should be as delightful and worry-free as possible! Bon streaming!
