Why did it get this rating?

This film is relatively darker with more realistic violence than the earlier Star Wars films.

Violence

This film contains frequent depictions of laser guns and hand-to-hand combat action violence, with some onscreen deaths and many implied offscreen deaths, including mass murder. Many stormtroopers are injured and implied to be killed, but no blood is shown as they are in full-body suits.

Most of the main characters in the film die, but their deaths aren’t graphic or directly shown on screen. For example, two characters sit together on a beach as the planet they are on is about to be decimated, knowing they have no chance of escaping it.

Some of the strongest moments of violence include:

  • A blind martial arts master beats up several stormtroopers.
  • One little girl watches as her mother is killed (offscreen).
  • A character is blown up by a grenade and we see some wounds.
  • There is a scene where a giant laser destroys an entire city, killing everyone in it. One main character is seen being buried in the rubble after telling his friends to escape without him.
  • During the final scene, many rebel soldiers are mowed down by a villain’s light saber and dark force-wielding abilities. They are choked, thrown against the roof, stabbed, and killed.
  • One scene references torture when a man becomes strange and woozy after an alien-like creature read his mind.
