Paddington in Peru is the third film in the Paddington film franchise that started with Paddington (2014). The first two films in the series are rated G, suitable for general audiences, in New Zealand. The slight increase in rating for this third film indicates some themes or content that may upset younger viewers.

Violence and content that may disturb

The film features some light scares that may impact younger children: ‘forest spirits’ are shown as characters covered in trees and vines. Scary at first, they later turn out to be nice. A bear statue suddenly roars, transporting Paddington to back to a memory in Peru.

Paddington, as a cub, falls off a tree into a raging river and is swept away. We also see the family have a boating accident where the boat travels down a river with rapids. The boat crashes against rocks, flips and sinks. Everyone survives by clinging to debris.

A mean character is rough with Paddington and shoves him to the ground.

Paddington and his family have a number of near-misses on their jungle adventure, in the style of slack stick comedy. Examples include:

  • Falling off a cliff and nearly being crushed by a rock
  • Nearly being crush by a wall falling on top of him (he’s standing in the spot where the window gap lands)
  • A piranha bites Paddington on the nose
  • A character is knocked overboard a boat by a sail

Told through festivalgoer footage, harrowing 911 calls, and interviews with survivors and families, the film raises questions about the responsibility of artists in an industry that pushes them to amplify their performances to drive revenue.
