Pornography

Pornography and other sexually explicit content can be classified – this includes a variety of formats from online images and video content to physical formats like DVD.

In the past, all pornography on physical media – like VHS or DVD – was classified by the Classification Office before being supplied to the public with an R18 label (which is a legal age restriction).

We no longer classify mainstream commercial porn as a matter of course, because of the rise of pornography websites and the decline in commercial distribution on physical formats like DVDs and video tapes.

Most pornography (and other sexual content) is not officially classified. However, we are still responsible for determining the line between what is legal or illegal based on our legislation. Learn more about the type of sexual content that is illegal here.
