Risen 3: Titan Lords is a third-person action role-playing game developed in Germany. Playing as a captain haunted by a ghost pirate, he and sister Patty search for an ancient treasure.
Exploring a crystal cave populated by demonic hounds, they discover a portal to another realm. Caught by a demon, the player's soul is taken to the underworld and Patty is left to bury her brother's corpse. However when a roaming mystic chances upon the fresh grave, the player is awoken from the dead. Faced with a slow transformation into a demon, the player embarks on a quest to find three mages and regain his soul. But with the underworld stirring, not everything is as it seems.
There are several oblique references to sex and prostitution such as a woman saying she doesn't do "other services", continuing "not even when times are tough!" However, completing quests for certain female characters results in discussion on "rewards". Some dialogue implying sexual intent occurs as the camera pans across to the bed and the scene fades to black. It resumes the next morning with some brief dialogue about the sexual prowess and "stamina" of the player character. Overall sexual content is of a limited extent and degree, with no nudity or sexual activity depicted.
There is a mild element of horror to some of the enemies and environments. Demonic hounds and bony humanoids attack the player in areas of decaying nature. Further enemies include a giant insectoid monster and regular enemies like large spiders or toothy 'sand demons'. There is also a humanoid demon which levitates without a lower body. Its ribcage expands below the torso with bones and internal organs visible for horrific effect.
The game deals with matters of crime including drugs, murder and theft. Amongst the skills players can acquire are intimidation, lockpicking and pickpocketing. These allow the player to steal from characters in the world for their personal benefit. Due to the overarching morality system such conduct is identified in a negative light with the player's alignment shifting towards the demonic with acts of violence or "mistreating others".
Regarding drugs, there are several characters in the world who appear to be under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms. One of these men inhabits a cave filled with mushrooms. Dialogue with him identifies him as disoriented, with the conversation veering off topic for comedic effect. No examples of drug use were encountered during examination.
The game primarily deals with violent and bloody combat. Numerous enemies and creatures populate the expansive environments and tend to attack if the player walks by. The moderate pace of fighting allows for considered parrying, dodging and timed attacks in order to succeed. Enemies vary from giant crabs and gorillas to demonic hounds and human guards but the depiction of bloody violence remains the same, reducing the overall impact.
Each successful attack results in a large, colourful spray of blood. However this does not splash onto the environment and there is no injury presented on the body. Killing an enemy or incapacitating a human character causes them to 'ragdoll' and fall realistically to the ground. Unconscious characters get up after a short period of time but corpses remain in the environment.
In terms of s3A, the game contains a moderate amount of highly offensive language. This is primarily used for emphasis but also in an aggressive manner. This highly offensive language occurs in both character monologues and player-selected dialogue options. Exposure to such language has the potential to inure impressionable audiences to its use, increasing the risk of imitation which may cause social difficulties for them.
Risen 3: Titan Lords is a pulpy action role-playing game set in a pirate-themed fantasy world. The unrestricted availability of the publication would be injurious to the public good due to its treatment of sex, horror, crime and violence. The regular depiction of bloody violence would shock and disturb young audiences. There are also some limited sexual references and low-level references to drug use, which are not suitable for children. Furthermore, the use of highly offensive language would be injurious to younger audiences.
Although placing a restriction on the publication limits the right to freedom of expression granted by the New Zealand Bill of Rights, the unrestricted availability of the publication would be injurious to the public good. However teenagers are unlikely to be unduly affected by this content as they have the maturity to place it within the context of a pulpy pirate adventure. As a result, a restriction to this age group is the lowest reasonable restriction which could be applied in order to prevent injury to the public good.
Therefore Risen 3: Titan Lords is classified as objectionable unless its availability is restricted to persons who have attained the age of 13 years.
